The EU-CONCERT COST Action (CA24103) is pleased to announce the EU-CONCERT Electrochemistry School on “Preparation and Measurements of Single Crystals”, taking place from 27 to 29 January 2027 at the National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Led by Yvonne Grunder and Dušan Strmčnik, this three-day training school will provide participants with theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in the preparation and electrochemical characterisation of single-crystal electrodes. The programme is designed to introduce participants to the use of well-defined single-crystal surfaces for investigating electrochemical interfaces, adsorption phenomena and electrocatalytic reactivity.

The school will combine morning lectures with extensive afternoon practical sessions, allowing participants to apply the concepts introduced in the lectures directly in the laboratory.

The programme will cover:

  • Single-crystal electrodes and experimental preparation: model surfaces, crystallographic orientation, surface quality, electrode preparation and annealing, sample transfer, and electrochemical cell assembly.
  • Probing electrochemical interfaces: investigating surface structure, adsorption and electrochemical reactivity using well-defined surfaces.
  • Electrochemical measurements: voltammetry and polarization curves, including the influence of scan rate, mass transport, resistance correction and measurement reproducibility.
  • Practical training: preparation and assembly of hanging meniscus and rotating disk electrode (RDE) configurations, initial voltammetric checks, acquisition and interpretation of electrochemical measurements, and troubleshooting.

On the final day, participants will focus on reproducibility and good experimental practice, repeating selected preparation and measurement procedures and comparing results obtained by different groups.

The school will accommodate up to 20 trainees, organised into four groups of five participants, ensuring hands-on interaction at the experimental workstations and close guidance from the trainers and demonstrators.

Participation support

Financial support is available for eligible EU-CONCERT members participating in the training school:

  • Trainees: EUR 130 daily allowance, with travel reimbursement up to EUR 400.
  • Trainers: EUR 180 daily allowance, with travel reimbursement up to EUR 400.

How to apply

This training school offers an excellent opportunity, particularly for early-career researchers and PhD students, to strengthen their experimental skills in electrochemistry, gain practical experience with single-crystal electrodes and exchange knowledge with researchers working in the field.

Applications must be submitted through the online application form by 30 November 2026.

The detailed agenda of the school is here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ljubljana!
