Abstract
Non-aqueous electrochemical interfaces are commonly used in batteries and electrocatalysis. However, atomic-level understanding of the electrical double layer and surface electrochemistry at these interfaces is currently limited.
In this work, we characterise metal single crystal surfaces in contact with non-aqueous electrolytes, with particular focus on the Au(111)/acetonitrile (ACN) interface. These interfaces cannot be considered ideally polarisable and electrochemical treatment results in surface modification in many cases. Here I will focus on how non-aqueous interfaces can be used as electrochemical model systems and what we can learn about the role of the solvent in electrochemical processes by replacing water with other molecules.
